With professional sports teams - the Eagles, Flyers, Phillies and 76ers for four major sports leagues – you are in the middle of action. All of these teams play within the city limits and have recently had new venues built for them. The Eagles play at Lincoln Financial Field called simply as The Linc, while the Phillies play at Citizens Bank Park. Philadelphia has a very exciting intercollegiate athletics scene featuring events like Big Five, Atlantic Ten, Big East and Ivy League. Penn Relays are world’s oldest and largest collegiate track events while the Dad Vail Regatta is the largest collegiate rowing competition in the nation. Besides nurturing the college athletes, Philadelphia has a series of National and International Sporting Events. These include the Devon Horse Show, Blue Cross Broad Street Run, Instinet Classic Senior Professional Golf Association Tour, Wachovia US PRO Cycling Championship, Jefferson Hospital Philadelphia Distance Run, U.S. Women’s Golf Amateur Championship and the Philadelphia Marathon.
Philadelphia has had its share of turmoil and heartbreak having had lost more games than any other in the history of sports in the US. But despite it all the city has moved ahead to carve out some of the best known sports figures in the country. With four Hessian Trophy winners, five Sullivan Award winners, two time golf open championship winners, eleven members in the Boxing hall of fame and countless Olympic Champions – the city is home to the spirit of sports and sporting events.
